Hillfields Farm provided a wonderful setting for Carys and Daniel’s Gloucestershire wedding. Surrounded by open countryside and rustic charm, the venue created a relaxed atmosphere where family and friends could come together and enjoy every part of the celebration.

From the moment the day began, there was a real sense that Carys and Daniel wanted their wedding to feel natural and unhurried. Rather than focusing on a strict schedule, they allowed plenty of time to spend with the people closest to them, creating a day filled with laughter, conversation and genuine emotion.

As a documentary wedding photographer, these are the moments I love capturing most. The quiet exchanges between family members, the laughter shared between friends and the small, unexpected moments that often become the most meaningful memories.

The surrounding countryside also provided the perfect backdrop for portraits of the newlyweds. Later in the day, we took some time away from the celebrations to capture a few relaxed photographs together, including intimate moments in the fields where the movement of the bride’s veil created some beautiful, natural images.

The 300-year-old, award winning dry hire barns provide the perfect setting for a wedding. The open surroundings and informal atmosphere allow couples and guests to enjoy themselves without feeling restricted. This creates the perfect opportunity to capture real moments as they happen — from emotional reactions during the ceremony to laughter and conversations during the celebrations.

Rather than constantly directing the day, I prefer to observe what is happening naturally and quietly document the story unfolding around me. The result is a collection of photographs that reflects not only how the wedding looked, but also how it felt.

One of the advantages of a countryside venue like Hillfields Farm is the variety of natural locations available for wedding photographs. The surrounding fields, rustic buildings, main barn and open landscape provide a beautiful backdrop throughout the day.

For couple portraits, I always look for opportunities where photographs feel natural rather than staged. A short walk together, a quiet conversation or simply enjoying the surroundings can create some of the most meaningful images.

The open fields and valley are particularly beautiful later in the day when the light becomes softer. Golden hour creates a warm, romantic atmosphere, and the movement of the landscape, natural textures and changing light can produce photographs that feel timeless.

The surrounding countryside also provides wonderful opportunities for capturing movement and emotion. A flowing veil, a gentle breeze or a couple simply enjoying a fun moment together can create images that feel completely authentic.

There is an equal amount of great locations for family and bridal party group photos. One particular area is the archway in front of the stables courtyard which was perfect for the bridal party. Other areas include the main barn and the tree lined area in front of the the barn which are great for larger group photos.

If the weather is kind, I always recommend setting aside around 15–20 minutes later in the day for some relaxed portraits together.

This is often one of my favourite parts of the wedding because it gives couples the chance to step away from the excitement for a few quiet moments. The softer evening light creates a beautiful atmosphere and allows photographs to be captured naturally without feeling like a formal photo session.

Family Group Photographs

Family photographs are an important part of every wedding day, and with a little organisation they can be completed quickly and efficiently.

I recommend photographing larger family groups before the wedding breakfast and while everyone is gathered together and easy to find. After confetti and group photographs, a relaxed approach lets you return quickly to enjoying time with your guests.

Confetti Photographs

Confetti photographs are always one of the happiest moments of a wedding day. The excitement immediately after the ceremony creates genuine smiles, laughter and wonderful reactions from family and friends.

Hillfields Farm’s outdoor surroundings create the perfect setting for natural confetti photographs full of energy and emotion. Confetti photographs work best near the ceremony area, where guests gather naturally and genuine moments can be captured.

Wet Weather
